Another Tough Month for Kodi

This month, 5 of our favorite add-ons from last month went belly-up. However, an exciting new add-on called Sportie proves once again that the Kodi community is still very much alive and well. We also discovered a newcomer on-demand TV/movie add-on called Death Streams that’s similar to Covenant but comes loaded with a slew of different stream sources.

Sportie

  • Current version: 2.00.007
  • The best sports add-on to come along since Pro Sport
  • IPTV links, Reddit feeds, AceStreams and more

Sportie is one of the very best and most comprehensive sports add-ons ever made.

Like Pro Sport, Sportie can gather feeds from various streaming communities on Reddit. However, Sportie is much easier to use compared to Pro Sport.

With Pro Sport, you have to add sports related subreddits yourself. But with Sportie, all the subreddits you need are already there.

sportie

In addition to the excellent Reddit menu, there are a ton of other areas to explore on Sportie. The Live Channels menu has pages of IPTV links – and a big percentage of them actually work.

But as with nearly all Kodi add-ons, you’ll find more than a few wonky areas on Sportie once you start digging around. Some Sportie submenus don’t work and others are completely bare. Additionally, if you live in the United States you may not care for Sportie’s focus on international sports content.

Overall, though, Sportie provides a welcome alternative to both Pro Sport and the notoriously unreliable add-on known as SportsDevil. Anything either of those sports add-ons can do, Sportie can do better.

Covenant

  • On-demand TV shows and movies
  • The all-around best replacement add-on for Exodus
  • You have to delete and reinstall Covenant to get the latest version
  • Several new patches are out (updated from 1.1.13 to 1.1.17)
  • Trakt works now (finally)

Covenant is still the best add-on around for on-demand content. Its simple interface and TV/Movie database integration feature helped Covenant become one of the most successful add-ons ever made.

But if you tried to download Covenant or update it recently, you’re likely about to throw your Kodi box at the wall.

Some behind-the-scenes issues are causing Covenant errors to occur. To bring Covenant back online, you have to delete Covenant and reinstall it again using the updated installation instructions provided below.

News and updates

If you hop over to Covenant’s page on GitHub you will see that developers have been busy adding updates to Covenant in recent weeks.

The biggest news is that Covenant’s developers have finally fixed Trakt. You can now pull up your Trakt data after you authorize Trakt within Covenant.

The most recent Covenant patch (1.1.17) is the “Bennu update.” Bennu is the latest version of a classic Kodi add-on called Phoenix. From the looks of things, Covenant developers may be integrating Covenant into Bennu in some way soon.

Other work performed included the usual scraper maintenance patches, language updates and various bug fixes.

Death Streams

  • Current version: 2.3.1
  • On-demand TV shows and movies
  • Trakt integration
  • Simple menu
  • New video sources

If you’re looking for content on Covenant and can’t find a decent stream, Death Streams is a good add-on to try. Death Streams is almost exactly like Covenant, only it pulls from a different pool of video lockers when it looks for streams around the web.

Trakt seems to work pretty well on Death Streams, though it seems a bit buggy compared to Covenant. Still, I was able to successfully use Death Stream’s Trakt feature to pull up a title that I added to my watch list.

Gurzil

  • Several new patches are out (upgraded from 4.0.3 to 4.1.0)
  • New Exodus fork
  • Except for the wolf themed art, Gurzil is exactly the same as Covenant

We chanced across Gurzil while looking around in the Smash repository a few months ago. Since that time, Gurzil has picked up some steam.

News and updates

The biggest news about Smash is that his website URL has changed. Last month, Smash was saving his repository to http://mediarepos.net/kodistuff/. The new link is: http://mediarepos.org/kodistuff/.

Though nothing about Gurzil’s interface has changed, version changes suggest that Gurzil may have received some under-the-hood tweaks in recent months.

There’s nothing amazing about Gurzil, but it’s a good add-on to have in your arsenal. In the event that something happens to Covenant or Death Streams, you can pull up Gurzil and use it to find movies and shows.

A Few New Tombstones In the Add-On Graveyard

Unfortunately, 5 of the add-ons we featured last month have either bit the dust or are on life support. The future doesn’t look good for Streamhub, Duckpool, No-Name, Wolfpack and Enigma.

Streamhub

  • Was once the best add-on for finding live TV feeds

Streamhub appears to be down right now – but it may not be out for the count.

From the looks of things, sClarke (the developer behind Streamhub) is still working on the add-on. Last month, Streamhub was at version 3.16. This month, version 3.17 came out. Additionally, StreamHub’s GitHub page shows that Streamhub sClarke pushed out a minor change just 8 hours ago.

When I tried to download Streamhub, the installation failed. The core files are still there, but some of Streamhub’s dependencies have been removed.

Is this just a temporary outage – or is Streamhub on the verge of going down for good? There’s no easy way to tell for sure, because sClarke is no longer on social media.

Hopefully, Streamhub will come back online soon. Streamhub was one of the few add-ons that had reliable live TV streams. But because sClarke’s social media pages are gone, the long-term prognosis for Streamhub looks bleak.

Last month, sClarke had found a way to import live feeds from the Android app known as Mobdro. Mobdro’s TV feeds are surprisingly stable, but its ads are annoying. Because Streamhub could automatically strip out Mobdro’s ads, Streamhub became our favorite live TV add-on.

Duckpool

  • No updates in several months

Kodi developer MuckyDuck took over iStream and rebranded it as Duckpool last summer. As time went by, MuckyDuck lost interest. From the looks of things, Duckpool appears to be stuck in version 1.0.0.73.

Duckpool was once my favorite add-on. I liked it because it has a built-in system for saving favorites and a useful search history feature. But without updates, add-ons quickly lose relevance. Video lockers – the sites that Kodi add-ons draw upon for content – change all the time. If add-ons don’t change with them, they become irrelevant.

MuckyDuck may have lost interest in not only Duckpool, but also the Kodi community in general. He hasn’t updated his Twitter account in quite some time.

No-Name

  • Was my personal favorite add-on before it vanished a few days ago

Up until it vanished with no warning whatsoever, my new favorite add-on this month was No-Name.

The No-Name add-on was unique because it offered both “homemade” content lists of films and TV shows, as well as IMDb, generated lists. Another thing I liked about No-Name was that it also had live TV links.

The mind behind No-Name was C0LDFIRE – one of Exodus’s major contributors. Unlike some indie Kodi developers that copy code from others and try to pass it off as their own, C0LDFIRE is known to have made several important original contributions to a variety of popular add-ons.

But now, C0LDFIRE seems to have vanished. C0LDFIRE’s Twitter page is gone. His website is still up, but it no longer contains any files.

Wolfpack

  • The members of the Wolfpack seem to have wandered off into the forest

Wolfpack’s responsiveness to Twitter requests and large quantity of interesting playlists earned it a featured spot on our best Kodi add-on list last month. But in recent weeks, Wolfpack seems to have disappeared without a trace.

Wolfpack’s main administrator was @morepowerllc on Twitter. Though MorePower’s Twitter account is still live, he hasn’t posted anything for quite some time. Additionally, both of Wolfpack’s websites seem to have gone dark.

Enigma

  • Progress on the once-promising Enigma add-on seems to have ground to a halt

When the Enigma Entertainment add-on came out a few months back, it had a lot going for it. Like No-Name, Enigma could connect you to both on-demand and live content. Additionally, Enigma had a strong following on Facebook.

But in recent weeks, Enigma’s developer appears to have lost interest. Problems started at the beginning of September, when the add-on stopped working properly.

enigma update

Wright has been teasing a new project that he says is in the works, but only time will tell if he’s really serious about it.
