After learning that TorGuard has some unique features that specifically cater to subscribers of Netflix and other streaming services, I decided to use TorGuard to attempt to access American Netflix from Budapest, Hungary.
Continue on to find out the results of my test.
What’s So Great About American Netflix?
Just about anywhere you go, you can get Netflix.
In fact, there are only four regions on earth that don’t have Netflix: China, North Korea, Syria and Crimea.
Even though you can get Netflix just about everywhere, licensing restrictions have prevented Netflix from offering the same library of titles to all of its customers.
Though the Japanese version of Netflix now has the most movies, Netflix customers that are located in the US still get the best overall deal.
In the US, you can watch 4500+ movies and over 1100 TV shows. But if you log in outside the US, you get less.
For example, Netflix subscribers in Europe only get around 400 TV shows and 1500 movies.
In other parts of the world, Netflix subscribers get even less content. If you ever visit Morocco, for example, you’d have to settle for around 40 TV shows and 120 movies.
The Key to Accessing American Netflix Anywhere
Netflix uses your IP address to determine your location. So in order to get into American Netflix, you need an American IP address.
What’s an IP address?
In many ways, IP addresses are like postal addresses. But instead of facilitating the delivery of mail, IP addresses help information flow from point A to point B.
If you have an American IP address, Netflix’s website will let you use the American version of Netflix. But if you have an IP address that points to some other part of the world, you’ll be stuck watching whatever titles are available there.
How to get an American IP address
Your physical address can’t easily be changed, unless of course you really move somewhere else. However, it’s actually very easy to change your IP address. All you need is a VPN (Virtual Private Network) service.
You Need the Right Tool for the Job
With a VPN, you can select your own IP address and make it look like you’re in the US, even when you’re actually located thousands of miles away.
Sounds easy enough, right? Well, here’s the catch: not all VPNs work with Netflix.
There are all kinds of VPNs out there, but not all of them are designed to work with Netflix.
If you get a VPN that doesn’t work with Netflix, you’ll run into this annoying error message:
But if you do get a Netflix-compatible VPN, you’ll be able to get to American Netflix anywhere.
Why Netflix Doesn’t Like VPNs
Netflix was forced to ban VPNs in 2016 because they were disrupting its business model.
All movies and TV shows get pushed through a bureaucratic release process.
For example, a summer blockbuster movie first gets released in the theaters. After four months or so, the movie comes out on DVD and Blu-ray. Next, streaming services like Netflix buy the movie’s streaming rights.
What makes things so complicated and slow is that new rounds of negotiations occur every step of the way. Also, each country has its own movie license marketplace.
If a local TV/movie broadcaster buys the rights to a movie, Netflix must wait for that deal to expire before it can add that movie to its library in that area.
Once you know the basics of how movies get licensed, it’s easy to see how Netflix’s licensing deals wouldn’t hold much water if it allowed VPN subscribers to hop into any Netflix region.
Netflix had to either figure out a new way to negotiate licensing deals or try to block all VPN services. Instead of attempting to rock the boat, Netflix took the easy way out and tried to uphold the status quo.
Fortunately, Netflix’s VPN ban isn’t very effective.
A Working Netflix VPN In Action
Though Netflix has managed to block many VPN services, there are plenty of them out there that still work.
Because I live outside the US, I rely on several different Netflix-compatible VPNs to access American Netflix.
Without a VPN, The Walking Dead doesn’t appear when I search for it. All I get is a suggestion to watch Night of the Living Dead when I try to pull it up.
But when I use a Netflix-compatible VPN, I can access The Walking Dead and many other shows and movies that I can’t normally get.
If you’ve tried out a few VPNs already, you probably already know that some Netflix-compatible VPNs are more reliable than others. Also, some work consistently but are quite slow.
Does TorGuard Work with American Netflix?
Yes, TorGuard does work with American Netflix.
Though TorGuard is somewhat expensive, it did seem faster than the other VPN services that I’ve tried.
After chatting with TorGuard’s customer support, a representative informed me that the best way to access American Netflix was via their “dedicated streaming IP address” add-on.
What’s a dedicated IP address?
Most VPN services use shared IPs. In a shared IP VPN system, you get a random IP address every time you connect. But with a dedicated IP address, you get the same IP address every time.
How much does it cost?
In order to get a dedicated streaming IP address through TorGuard, you need to first buy a basic VPN subscription.
TorGuard gives you four payment options: a $10 monthly plan, a $20 quarterly plan, a semi-annual $30 plan and a yearly $60 plan.
Once you purchase a VPN subscription, you have to get the dedicated streaming IP address add-on.
A dedicated static US IP address costs $8 extra per month.
TorGuard accepts a huge number of payment systems including Bitcoin and many others.
New payment options include Subway and CVS gift cards, Union Pay, Alipay, Paysafecard, CashU, Bank Transfer, WebMoney, iDeal, Boleto and many more.
How to Set Up TorGuard for American Netflix
Here is everything you have to do to get a dedicated streaming IP address on TorGuard.
As mentioned above, you need a basic VPN subscription first. The dedicated IP address feature is an upgrade that you have to buy separately once you have a basic VPN subscription.
Step 2: Get the static IP address upgrade
After you purchase TorGuard’s basic VPN subscription, they’ll send you logon credentials. Use these to log onto the TorGuard website.
Once you’re in, click Services and then My Services.
Next, click the Manage button next to Anonymous VPN – Anonymous VPN and select Upgrade.
Finally, click the drop down menu and select x1 Streaming IP USA $7.99USD.
Step 3: Contact customer support
Once you’ve completed your purchase, you have to submit a support ticket to get your new American IP address.
Go back to your account home page, scroll down to Open Support Tickets. Then, click the plus icon to open a new ticket.
In the subject line, type in Dedicated IP Request. Then, request your IP address in the body of the message.
After an hour or two, a TorGuard customer service representative will send your IP address to you via email.
Step 4: Download and configure TorGuard
Go back to your account page and select Downloads from the dropdown menu.
Download the TorGuard installer.
Open the installer and accept all the default installation options.
Next, open TorGuard and click More Settings…
Now, click Servers and enter your dedicated IP address.
Click Save, then click Select server…
The American server you just set up will appear on the top of the server list.
After you connect to it, you’ll be able to access American Netflix from anywhere in the world.
TorGuard Pros and Cons
Here’s a quick overview of everything I liked and disliked about TorGuard after using it for several weeks to watch American Netflix abroad.
As mentioned above, TorGuard was one of the fastest Netflix-compatible VPNs that I’ve tried so far.
Many different payment options
TorGuard accepts just about every payment method there is including Bitcoin and several other popular digital currencies. According to the TorGuard website, there are over 80 different payment options available.
Good customer support
TorGuard’s customer support team responded quickly to my questions.
If you get the $10-per-month VPN subscription and the $8 dedicated streaming IP address add-on, you’ll have to pay $18 every month just to get to American Netflix. Other plans offer more bang for the buck, but you have to be willing to pay in advance to get a discount.
Complicated setup process
If you’re looking for a quick and easy American Netflix solution, TorGuard is not for you. You’ll have to interact with customer support and wait an hour or two to get your static IP address.
Here are three other VPNs that also work with American Netflix.
NordVPN is the cheapest American Netflix VPN out there right now. On the other hand, service is sometimes spotty and NordVPN’s support team is a bit slow to respond to questions.
NordVPN has a $12 monthly plan, a $79 2-year plan and a $69 1-year plan.

ExpressVPN is the ideal VPN for people who hate computers. ExpressVPN’s support team is friendly and knowledgeable and ExpressVPN’s software is extremely easy to use. On the other hand, ExpressVPN’s subscription prices are quite high.
ExpressVPN has a $13 monthly plan and a $60 6-month plan. If you pay for 15 months of service in advance you can get ExpressVPN for $100, or $6.67 a month.

VyprVPN likes to brag about its super advanced “Chameleon mode,” which is so advanced that it can supposedly defeat China’s “Great Firewall.” You don’t need Chameleon mode if all you want to do is access American Netflix, though. The standard plan works just fine.
Unless you live in China or have a large family, the standard VyprVPN plan is all you need if your primary goal is to access American Netflix outside of the US. You can pay either $60 for the entire year or $10 month-to-month.
TorGuard vs. NordVPN vs. ExpressVPN vs. VyprVPN: Which VPN is Better for Netflix?
Here are some questions that will help lead you to the Netflix VPN that’s the perfect fit for you.
If you’re tired of dealing with poor performance and dropped connections…
If you’re sick of dealing with technical issues when accessing American Netflix, you may want to switch to TorGuard. Because TorGuard sells dedicated IP addresses that are specifically designed to work with Netflix and other streaming services, it’s the most reliable choice.
If you’re looking for a quick and easy solution…
You may want to go with ExpressVPN if you’re not good with computers. ExpressVPN is the easiest to use and has the best customer support team.
If you’re looking for the cheapest VPN service…
NordVPN has the lowest prices, but you have to be willing to pay in advance if you want to get the best deal. If you plan on paying month-by-month, all 3 services cost about the same.
If you intend to share your account…
NordVPN has the best account sharing policy because it lets you connect to up to 6 devices at the same time through one account. ExpressVPN limits you to 3 simultaneous connections unless you pay extra to upgrade. TorGuard lets you get 5 concurrent connections and you can add more if you’re willing to pay $1 extra per month for each extra connection. The basic VyprVPN plan limits you to 3 connections, but you can get 5 if you upgrade to VyprVPN Premium.
TorGuard is somewhat expensive and a bit of a hassle to set up. However, the extra money and effort may be worth it if you’re looking for a stable, consistent way to get to American Netflix from anywhere in the world.
