For forty years BET has provided audiences with a unique lineup of African-American content. In 2017, the network created BET Her to serve African-American women. Three streaming services — Philo, fuboTV and AT&T TV Now — let you watch BET Her without cable.

Philo on the iPad

In order to offer the lowest prices possible, Philo does not try to replace the full cable experience. This streaming service foregoes the local channels, cable news networks and sports channels that keep driving up prices. Instead, you get a roster of basic cable channels that, like BET Her, focus on lifestyle, entertainment and reality programming.

Philo is especially attractive to people who use over-the-air HDTV antennas to get their free, local TV broadcasts. The low-cost streaming service is a great supplement that gets you most of the cable experience.

Philo Pricing and Packages

Philo delivers nearly 60 channels to your devices for only $20 per month. Although still not the cheapest in the industry — AT&T’s Watch TV is only $15 per month — Philo slightly higher price delivers twice as much content.

Unfortunately, Philo does not offer expansion options or premium movie subscriptions. You’ll have to deal with separate billing by subscribing to services like Hulu or Disney+ separately.

Philo Channels

You will find that Philo offers several channels that feature content by and for the African-American community. In addition to BET Her, you can watch Aspire TV, BET, OWN and UPtv.

The lifestyle and entertainment channels that Philo offers includes several options for African-American content and content that supports under-represented communities. In addition to BET Her, you will find Aspire TV, BET, OWN and UPtv.

Of course, you will also find a full lineup of entertainment channels including Lifetime, AMC and the Hallmark Channel. Lifestyle channels include the always-popular Food Network, Travel Channel and HGTV. Despite Philo’s focus on lifestyle and entertainment, you can get 24-hour news from Cheddar News, Cheddar Business and the BBC World Service.

You can learn even more about Philo’s channel lineup here.

Philo Supported Devices

Philo has done a great job expanding its lineup of apps to support most major streaming platforms.

  • Living room devices: Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, Roku.
  • Smart TVs and Blu-ray players: Televisions based on Fire TV, Android TV and Roku.
  • Mobile devices and tablets: Android and iOS.
  • Game consoles: None.
  • Desktop browsers: Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari.

You can learn more about Philo’s device support here.

Philo Simultaneous Streams

You and your family can use as many as three devices at the same time. While this is better than the standard limit most services offer, you cannot upgrade the feature to support a larger household

Learn more about simultaneous streaming on Philo here.

Philo DVR

There is no limit to the number of programs you can record to Philo’s cloud DVR. However, each recording expires after only thirty days.

You won’t have to wade through everyone’s recordings to find the shows you want to watch. Philo lets you assign individual user profiles to as many as ten people. Each person gets their own DVR library, watch history and recommendations.

You’ll find more details about Philo’s cloud DVR here.

Philo On-Demand Library

The channels in Philo’s lineup contribute about thirty thousand hours of content to Philo’s on-demand streaming library.

fuboTV interface

Many people come to fuboTV expecting it to be a purely sports-centric streaming service. That was true at the beginning, but today’s fuboTV is now a full-featured alternative to cable. You get lifestyle and entertainment channels like BET Her, local TV stations and 24-hour cable news networks. Of course, fuboTV is still all about sports so half of the channel lineup streams of sports-centric content.

fuboTV Pricing and Packages

Unfortunately, you can’t watch BET Her with fuboTV’s Standard or Family subscription plans. Instead, you have to choose between two options. You can get the Ultra plan which offers fuboTV’s full 170+ channel lineup for $99 per month. The other option is to sign up for either the Standard or the Family plan and purchase the fubo Extra add-on package for $6 per month.

*Note that in order to see the Family, Entertainment, and Ultra plans, you need to first press “Start Free Trial.” After you create an account, you’ll see all of these plans.

The premium movie channels that fuboTV offers as optional subscriptions include Showtime and AMC Premiere. You can also tailor the Standard and Ultra plans with add-on plans that feature English, Spanish or Portuguese sports channels. By the time you add all of this, though, you are probably better off getting the Ultra plan.

fuboTV Channels

Many of the popular basic cable channels are part of the lineup in all of fuboTV’s subscription plans. This includes lifestyle channels like HGTV and Food Network as well as entertainment channels like AMC, TNT and Lifetime. Fox News, CNN and MSNBC cover the gamut of cable news networks.

Of course, sports is what fuboTV is all about. Half of the channels in each subscription plan’s lineup are sports-centric. You’ll find Fox, CBS and NBC sports channels and the NFL Network. The Ultra plan adds the NHL Network and NBA TV among others. In addition, you’ll find a strong lineup of channels that broadcast soccer from leagues around the world.

Unfortunately, fuboTV does not carry ESPN. This could be a big deal for fans of the big American sports leagues.

Learn more about fuboTV’s channel lineup here.

fuboTV Local Channels & Regional Sports Networks

Much of the United States’ population can watch their local Fox and NBC stations on fuboTV. Support for Univision, Unimás and Telemundo is also pretty good. CBS and The CW stations, on the other hand, are only available in about a third of the TV markets in the United States. You can’t watch ABC at all.

When Fox sold off its regional sports networks to the Sinclair cable company, fuboTV lost access to all of those networks. If your regional sports are provided by NBC or the small providers SNY, MSG and NESN then fuboTV has you covered.

fuboTV Supported Devices

You will find fuboTV in the app stores on most streaming platforms.

  • Living room devices: Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast and Roku.
  • Smart TVs and Blu-ray players: Samsung televisions as well as devices based on Amazon Fire TV, Android TV and Roku.
  • Mobile devices and tablets: Android and iOS.
  • Game consoles: None.
  • Desktop browsers: Chrome, Explorer, Safari.

You can learn more about fuboTV’s device support here.

fuboTV Simultaneous Streams

The number of devices you and your family can use simultaneously varies based on your subscription plan. With the Standard plan, you can only use two devices at the same time unless you pay another $6 per month.

The Family and Ultra plans include the three-device limit.

You can learn more about fuboTV’s simultaneous streams here.

fuboTV DVR

The cloud DVR’s features are also dependent on your subscription plan. The Standard plan has a thirty-hour limit unless you pay the $10 monthly fee to get a five-hundred-hour limit. The Family and Ultra plans come standard with five hundred hours of recording capacity. The recordings do not expire.

Learn more about fuboTV’s DVR feature here.

fuboTV On-Demand Library

In addition to the on-demand content provided by each of the channels in fuboTV’s lineup, you will find fuboTV original content produced for its fubo Sports Network. This channel features sports news programs and licenses sports-themed movies and TV shows.

AT&T TV Now

For the complete cable-replacement experience, AT&T TV Now is the streaming service to get. It offers the most selection of subscription options, the largest channel lineups… and the highest prices.

AT&T TV Now Pricing and Packages

The featured subscription plans AT&T TV Now promotes the most — Plus and Max — do not include BET Her in their channel lineups. Instead, you have to subscribe to the Xtra or Ultimate plans — AT&T TV Now’s two most expensive subscriptions. Xtra includes more than 100 channels for $124 per month. Ultimate includes more than 125 channels for $135 per month.

AT&T TV Now offers several expansion options. HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, Epix and Starz are available with their own monthly fees. Spanish-speaking households can add a slate of Spanish-language channels from across the Americas. Uniquely, AT&T TV Now offers three international add-on programs that give you channels from Brazil, South Korea or Vietnam.

AT&T TV Now Channels

The large channel lineups in the Xtra and Ultimate plans include channels serving African-American audiences like BET Her as well as Aspire TV, BET and UPtv. Sports fans will appreciate having a full lineup of channels from ESPN, Fox and NBC. All of the major cable news networks are part of the lineup as well.

The main difference between the Xtra and Ultimate plans are the eight Starz channels included with Ultimate.

AT&T TV Now Local Channels & Regional Sports Networks

Unfortunately, AT&T TV Now’s zip code lookup tool stopped working in 2019. There’s no way to find out what local and regional channels you get without signing up for the free trial (funny how that works). However, AT&T TV Now has deals with most owners of local ABC, CBS, The CW, Fox, NBC, Telemundo, Univision and Unimás stations.

Most of the major regional sports networks have relationships with AT&T TV Now so you are probably going to get those stations.

AT&T TV Now Supported Devices

AT&T TV Now apps are available on many devices.

  • Living room devices: Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast and Roku.
  • Smart TVs and Blu-ray players: Samsung televisions as well as devices based on Amazon Fire TV and Roku.

  • Game consoles: None.
  • Desktop browsers: Chrome and Safari.

You can learn more about AT&T TV Now’s device support here.

AT&T TV Now Simultaneous Streams

All of AT&T TV Now’s primary subscription plans support three devices simultaneously. The three international packages have only a two-device limit which can be upgraded to three devices for another $5 per month.

Learn more about simultaneous streaming on AT&T TV Now here.

AT&T TV Now DVR

All of AT&T TV Now’s subscription plans have a five hundred hour recording capacity. However, you can’t keep those recordings forever. The cloud DVR has a ninety-day expiration period.

AT&T TV Now On-Demand Library

The on-demand library contains content provided by each of the channels.
