Philo on tablets

If you like casual TV and you’re into lifestyle entertainment, then you’re probably going to like Philo. Out of all the paid cable alternatives, Philo offers the cheapest deal. Given its low subscription cost, you might assume that it doesn’t have much to offer in the way of features and channels. But actually, Philo has excellent apps for a wide variety of platforms, 58 live cable TV channels and an unlimited DVR that lets you save as much TV content as you want.

Philo Pricing and Packages

Philo keeps things simple with a one-size-fits-all subscription plan. There are no feature expansions or channel add-on packs to tempt you into spending more. For $20, you get CLEO TV and 57 other cable TV staples. Everyone who pays the $20 fee can watch all the channels that Philo offers.

At launch, Philo offered two plans: a $16 plan with 37 channels and the $20 plan with 46 channels. Even though Philo got rid of the $16 option, it decided to let its existing subscribers stick with it. This was a significant move because it showed that Philo is committed to keeping its prices low and won’t likely force its existing subscribers to pay more if it raises its subscription prices again sometime down the line. Some other streaming services– like Netflix, for example– force all their existing subscribers to pay more after a price raise.

Philo Channels

As mentioned above, Philo recently increased the number of channels that it carries from 46 to 57. Many of the channels that you get when you subscribe fall into the lifestyle category. Channels that are similar to CLEO TV include BET, Aspire, BET Her, OWN and Logo. Other popular channels include A&E, AMC, Comedy Central, Discovery, HGTV, Nick and VH1. At launch, Philo didn’t offer much in the way of news, but now Philo subscribers can catch up with current events by watching BBC America and Cheddar News.

Even though Philo’s channel menu is impressive given its low price, there are some gaps in the menu that you should be aware of before you sign up. Philo is one of the few streaming services that doesn’t have any sports channels whatsoever. It doesn’t carry any of the “big four” American broadcast networks, either. However, those downsides may not matter much to people who use a TV antenna or aren’t into sports anyway.

Philo Supported Devices

When it comes to apps, Philo supports all the major platforms. If you have an iOS, Android device, Chromecast or Roku, you can use it to watch Philo. However, some Philo users complain about the fact that the streaming service has yet to add a Chromecast button to its apps. You can still use Philo with Chromecast, but you have to open the Philo website on your computer and stream from there if you wish to do so.

  • TV streaming media players: Apple TV (4th gen and up), Amazon Fire TV (all models), Chromecast and Roku (all current models).
  • Smart TVs: Android TV (5.0 and up).
  • Mobile devices and tablets: Android (7.0 and up, Chrome browser), iOS (10.3 and up).
  • Game consoles: None.
  • Desktop browsers: Most Mac and PC browsers.

Philo Simultaneous Streams

It’s good to have some account sharing flexibility for situations when you want to let other people watch your streams. These could be friends, family members or even roommates. With Philo, you can use your account to watch TV at the same time as up to two other people. That’s the industry standard for streaming services. Some are more flexible, but others are more restrictive.

Philo DVR

Philo has an above average DVR that lets you save as much content as you want. This makes Philo convenient for people who have jobs or other commitments that prevent them from catching their favorite TV shows.

Philo On-Demand Library

Even if you forget to make a recording, chances are high that you can watch whatever episode you missed on-demand. There are also some movies you can watch in the library, as well. Philo’s partners SundanceTV and AMC provide Philo’s on-demand library with a fair amount of movie content.

Given that you have to pay to use Philo, you might assume that you won’t have to see any ads when you use it. Unfortunately, this isn’t true when you watch on-demand content. Every now and then, you’ll have to take a commercial break. There’s no upgrade that will remove the ads, either. Some other services that insert ads into content provide a commercial free subscription option.

Watch CLEO TV on XFINITY Instant TV

If you get your internet through Comcast, you may want to consider signing up with Xfinity Instant TV. Lots of channels are available though it, including CLEO TV. Some of its major benefits include low subscription prices and the fact that all subscribers can stream all the major broadcast networks, including ABC, CBS, the CW, FOX, NBC and PBS. However, there’s a catch: you can’t sign up if you’re not a Comcast subscriber. On the other hand, if you don’t like the internet provide that you have now, XFINITY Instant TV’s reasonable price and competitive channel lineup might convince you to switch.

XFINITY Instant TV Pricing and Packages

The $15 base plan includes all the major American broadcast networks– and that’s it. To get CLEO TV, you’ll need to spend another $15 to get the Entertainment expansion pack. Other expansion packs include Sports and News ($30/month), Kids and Family ($10/month), Latino ($5/month) and Deportes ($7/month).

XFINITY Instant TV Channels

The base plan comes with ABC, CBS, the CW, FOX, NBC and PBS. Entertainment has aspirational channels like CLEO TV and BET, as well as edu-tainment channels like Discovery and History. With Kids and Family, you get several different Disney channels, plus MTV, Cartoon Network and other family-friendly picks. Latino and Deportes both feature Spanish language channels. The Sports and News add-on has several ESPN channels, including the main ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN News and ESPNU. The news part of the package includes FOX, MSNBC, CNN and many others.

XFINITY Instant TV Supported Devices

XFINITY Instant TV doesn’t have as many apps as Philo and other similar streaming services. However, it is available on Roku, iPhones and iPads, Android phones and tablets and web browsers. There are no apps for Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV or Android TV, though.

XFINITY Instant TV Simultaneous Streams

Since this streaming service’s simultaneous stream limit is just two devices, you can only share your account with one other person when you watch TV.

You can save up to 20 hours of TV content to XFINITY Instant TV’s DVR. There are no upgrades that let you get more space.

XFINITY Instant TV On-Demand Library

Most of XFINITY Instant TV’s on-demand content consists of recently aired TV show episodes. However, some movies are also available.

Watch CLEO TV on Spectrum TV Essentials

Spectrum TV Essentials is very similar to XFINITY Instant TV. If you don’t get your internet through Spectrum, you can’t sign up. But if you do, it’s a cost effective way to stream not only CLEO TV but all kinds of other cable TV channels. However, there’s a catch: Spectrum TV Essentials is not available everywhere. The only way to find out if you can buy a subscription is to visit the Spectrum TV Essentials website and provide your home address.

Spectrum TV Essentials Pricing and Packages

Spectrum TV Essentials chose to go with a basic subscription package that includes all the channels that it offers. The $15/month base plan comes with over 65 channels.

Spectrum TV Essentials Channels

This streaming service’s channel lineup is very comparable to Philo’s. Available channels include A&E, AMC, American Heroes Channel, Animal Planet, AXS TV, BBC America, BBC World News, BET, BET Her, BET Jams, BET Soul, Bloomberg, Cheddar and of course CLEO TV.

While the sheer number of channels you get is good considering the price, Spectrum TV Essentials comes up a bit short in the sports department. If you want a streaming service that has ESPN, FS1 and other similar sports channels, you might be disappointed. Check the Spectrum TV Essentials website for the full lineup.

Spectrum TV Essentials Supported Devices

Spectrum TV Essentials has apps for iOS, Android, Apple TV, Roku, Xbox One, Amazon Kindle Fire and Samsung smart TVs. If you don’t use those devices, you can access your streams via Spectrum’s website instead.

Though Spectrum TV Essentials has better app support compared to XFINITY Instant TV, it still has some gaps. The fact that this streaming service doesn’t natively support Google Chromecast and Android TV yet might be a disadvantage for some.

Spectrum TV Essentials Simultaneous Streams

Spectrum TV Essentials doesn’t have much to offer in the way of account sharing features. You can only stream to one screen at a time. If someone else tries to watch TV on another device through you’re account while you’re streaming, they’ll get an error message.

Spectrum TV Essentials DVR

There is no DVR at this time, but Spectrum apparently has plans to launch one later according to a press release.

Spectrum TV Essentials On-Demand Library

The Spectrum TV Essentials on-demand catalog is small compared to what other streaming services offer. It doesn’t have any movies yet, but some recently aired TV shows are available on demand.

How to Watch CLEO TV on Amazon Fire TV

You can watch CLEO TV on Amazon Fire TV with Philo or Spectrum TV Essentials. Simply go to the Amazon Fire TV app store and click whatever live TV service appeals to you the most– or try them all. They both have free trials. XFINITY Instant TV doesn’t have an Amazon TV app yet.

How to Watch CLEO TV on Roku

You can watch CLEO TV on Amazon Fire TV with one of these streaming services: PhiloXFINITY Instant TV or Spectrum TV Essentials. The process of installing a Roku app is the same as installing a smartphone app. Just look up the app you want to try and complete the sign-up process to get going. Since all four streaming services have free trials, you can see what you think about all of them before you commit.

How to Watch CLEO TV on Apple TV

You can watch CLEO TV on Amazon Fire TV with one of these streaming services: Philo, or Spectrum TV Essentials. Apple’s app store has them both, so try them out for yourself and compare. XFINITY Instant TV doesn’t have an Apple TV app yet.

The CLEO TV Website

If you don’t want to spend money for a streaming service that has CLEO TV, you can just use the CLEO TV website to watch free CLEO TV content. Unfortunately, you can’t get a live stream of the channel through the site. Another downside is that there are no CLEO TV apps. This could be a potential issue for people that usually use some kind of TV device to watch TV, like an Apple TV or Amazon Fire TV.

Despite these downsides, the CLEO TV site is worth checking out because there’s plenty of on-demand content available to binge there. Depending on the title, you may be able to binge a show from the beginning. Other shows only offer a small selection of full episodes. The “Explore” section of the CLEO TV website contains articles about prominent African-American celebrities, as well as self-care tips and fashion advice.
