Are your kids fans of Doc McStuffins, Lion Guard, The Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and other popular Disney Junior shows? If the answer was yes and that’s the main reason why you’ve stuck with your traditional cable TV provider, know this: there are now plenty of better options out there. Thanks to the fact that competition among the streaming service providers is heating up, there are more ways to watch Disney Junior without cable than ever before. Keep reading to get the full details.

Sling TV

Sling TV is one of the best overall cord-cutting solutions out there. The main reason: it’s very customizable. Once you get one of the two base plans, you can pick from over 20 add-on channel packages. Many of those add-on packages contain rare channels you can’t find anywhere else. Another great thing about Sling TV is that it’s inexpensive.

Channels and pricing

There are two main Sling TV plans: Sling Orange and Sling Blue. Both individual plans cost $25 unless you get both together for $40. To get Disney Junior, you’ll need to get Sling Orange and the $5 Kids Extra add-on.

Sling Orange contains several other family-friendly channels in addition to Disney Junior, plus ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN3. Other kids’ entertainment channels include Cartoon Network and Disney Channel. The Kids Extra comes with Baby TV, ducktv, NickToons, Boomerang, Disney XD Nick Junior and TeenNick.

Sling Orange Sling Blue Sling Orange + Blue
Price $25 $25 $40
Channels 30+ 40+ 50+
Simultaneous Streams 1 3 4*
ESPN Yes No Yes
Fire TV Support Yes Yes Yes
Roku Support Yes Yes Yes

* You get one stream with Sling Orange and up to 3 simultaneous streams with Sling Blue.

Sling TV has opted to not include CBS or ABC in any of their channel packages, and coverage of other broadcast stations varies depending on where you live. However, the fact that Sling TV will send you a free RCA HDTV antenna when you prepay for two months of Sling TV offsets this small disadvantage. Whenever you want to watch CBS, Fox, NBC or ABC, you can switch inputs and use your antenna to catch the news, tune into your favorite show or watch the game.

Sling TV’s cloud DVR is not quite as competitive as the cloud DVR that other streaming services offer. You have to pay $5 to unlock it, and even then you have limits. None of the Disney-owned channels are compatible with Sling TV’s cloud DVR. That means that you can’t record Disney Junior, ESPNU, Freeform, Disney Channel, Disney XD, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, ESPN Deportes, ESPN Goal Line, ESPN Bases Loaded or the SEC Network.

Another restriction that you’ll run into with Disney Junior and the other Disney-owned channels is that you can only stream them to one device at a time. In other words, if one of your kids is watching Disney Junior on their tablet, you’ll get an error message if you try to stream it on your living room TV.

On the other hand, few streaming services offer more TV device compatibility than Sling TV. The reason for that could be that Sling TV was one of the first internet-based cord-cutting solutions to hit the market. As a result, there are Sling TV apps for all kinds of different TV devices.

TV Everywhere compatibility is another Sling TV strong point. Your Sling TV credentials will unlock a slew of different cable TV websites, including beIN SPORTS CONNECT, Bravo Airplay, CNBC Airplay, E! Now, FOX NOW, FX NOW, NatGeoTV, NFL Network, Olympic Channel, SYFY, WatchESPN and many more. Once unlocked, you can use those channels’ apps to watch TV instead of Sling TV. Unfortunately, the DisneyNOW app doesn’t yet support Sling TV.

If you don’t care about customization and you just want an inexpensive streaming service that looks and feels like traditional cable TV, you may want to check out AT&T’s DirecTV Now. DirecTV Now’s super cheap $40 plan includes not only Disney Junior but also 65+ other channels. New features like improved account sharing and a free cloud DVR sweeten the deal.

Channels and pricing

Unlike Sling TV, DirecTV Now went out of its way to sign all the local broadcast affiliate channels. That means that depending on where you live, you may be able to get all your local TV channels through DirecTV Now.

Prices start at $40 and go up to $75. The more you pay, the more channels you get. With the most expensive plan, you get 125+ channels. The $40 plan includes the majority of Disney’s most popular family channels, including Disney XD and Disney Channel.

When DirecTV Now first debuted, it didn’t have many features. All that has changed with the release of DirecTV Now 2.0. New features include a free 20-hour cloud DVR and the ability to unlock a third simultaneous stream for $5 more each month.

One big advantage that DirecTV Now has over Sling TV is better TV Everywhere support. DirecTV Now unlocks Disney’s excellent DisneyNow app. That means that your kids will be able to watch Disney Junior on their tablets while the rest of the family watches other DirecTV Now channels on the living room TV. There are plenty of other TV Everywhere apps that work with DirecTV Now. Visit the DirecTV Now website to see the full list.

Like Sling TV, DirecTV Now has apps for a large number of TV devices:

  • Living room devices: Apple TV, Apple TV, Roku.
  • Smart TVs and Blu-ray players: Televisions based on Fire TV and Roku.
  • Mobile devices and tablets: Android and iOS.
  • Game consoles: None.
  • Desktop browsers: Chrome and Safari.

Another benefit of DirecTV Now is that AT&T will often send you a free TV device as a reward for signing up. Check the DirecTV Now website for more information.

YouTube TV is another relatively new streaming service that hit the market just a few years ago. Disney Junior is one of the 70+ channels you get when you sign up.

Though YouTube TV’s channel menu isn’t quite as big as Sling TV’s or Direct TV Now’s, it compensates for this shortcoming with excellent features.

Channels and packages

There’s only one plan you can get when you buy YouTube TV: a $40 package that includes roughly 70 different popular cable TV channels. This package includes Disney Junior, Disney XD, the main Disney Channel and many other family-friendly staples.

There aren’t many premium channels on the menu, though. The premium channels that YouTube TV does carry, you have to pay extra to get.

Features and extras

As mentioned above, YouTube TV shines when it comes to features. The cloud DVR is particularly excellent. With YouTube TV, you can record as much TV as you want. There are no limits.

Another nice thing about YouTube TV is the fact that it lets you create up to six different profiles. Each profile gets its own recommendations and a separate unlimited cloud DVR.

The only feature downside to YouTube TV is the fact that it doesn’t work with any Amazon TV device. The reason: the two Silicon Valley giants feuded in 2017 and their business relationships have suffered ever since.

  • Living room devices: Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast and Roku.
  • Smart TVs and Blu-ray players: Certain models from HiSense, LG, Samsung and Sharp as well as televisions based on Android TV and Roku.
  • Mobile devices and tablets: Android and iOS.
  • Game consoles: Xbox One.
  • Desktop browsers: Chrome.

PlayStation Vue is yet another streaming service that carries Disney Junior. In addition to PlayStation consoles, PlayStation Vue apps are available on just about every type of TV device. Another benefit of PlayStation Vue is that few other streaming services can match its account sharing features.

Channels and pricing

PlayStation Vue’s plans start at $45, making it somewhat more expensive than most other streaming services.

  • Access: 45+ channels for $45 per month.
  • Core: 70+ channels for $50 per month.
  • Elite: 94 channels for $60 per month.
  • Ultra: 96 channels, including HBO and Showtime, for $80 per month.

Like YouTube TV, PlayStation Vue has excellent features. Chief among these include a five-device simultaneous stream limit. The fact that you can share your account with five people at once makes PlayStation Vue a good choice if you have lots of roommates or a large family.

PlayStation Vue’s cloud DVR is another strong feature. As is the case with YouTube TV, you can record as much TV as you like.

Like DirecTV Now, PlayStation Vue has good support for TV Everywhere. In addition to DisneyNOW, there are around 50 other TV channel sites and apps that work with PlayStation Vue.

PlayStation Vue’s device support is quite good as well:

  • Living room devices: Apple TV, Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast and Roku.
  • Smart TVs and Blu-ray players: Televisions based on Amazon Fire TV, Android TV and Roku.
  • Mobile devices and tablets: Android, Amazon Fire Tablets and iOS.
  • Game consoles: PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.
  • Desktop browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Microsoft Edge.
hulu with live tv how to watch ncaa football without cable live alternatives

If you already have a Hulu subscription, upgrading to Hulu with Live TV will give you access to a live stream of Disney Junior and many other cable TV channels.

Channels and pricing

Like PlayStation Vue, Hulu’s prices are on the high side compared to the competition. Prices start at $45, and you have to pay more if you want to unlock the service’s best features.

Hulu with Live TV is one of the only streaming services that offer unlimited account sharing. However, unlimited simultaneous streaming isn’t free. You have to pay an additional $15 each month for the Unlimited Screens add-on. If you don’t get the upgrade, you’re stuck with the default two-stream-at-a-time limit.

All Hulu with Live TV subscribers get a free 50-hour cloud DVR. For an extra $15 per month, you can upgrade to 200 hours of recording time with the Enhanced Cloud add-on.

Hulu with Live TV has a distinct advantage over the competition when it comes to on-demand content. All subscribers get access to Hulu’s catalog of on-demand shows and movies.

Device support for Hulu with Live TV is quite good. It’s one of the few streaming services that works with Xbox 360.

  • Living room devices: Apple TV, Chromecast, Apple TV.
  • Smart TVs and Blu-ray players: Samsung and LG smart TVs.
  • Mobile devices and tablets: iOS and Android.
  • Game consoles: Xbox One, Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch.
  • Desktop browsers: Chrome, Edge, Safari 10+, or Firefox 15+.

The DisneyNow App

DisneyNow app

Disney’s excellent DisneyNow app gives you an easy way to watch live and on-demand Disney content on a wide variety of different TV devices. Once you unlock the app, your kids will be able to access all kinds of Disney content, including games, TV shows, music, movies, live TV streams and more.

Another benefit of the app is that you can set up unique profiles for each of your kids. If you set up your younger kids for Disney Junior mode, they won’t be able to view content that may be more appropriate for older kids.

However, there’s a catch: you have to sign up with a TV provider to use it. Fortunately, all but one of the streaming services listed above will unlock DisneyNow. If you sign up with DirecTV Now, YouTube TV, PlayStation Vue or Hulu with Live TV, your kids will be able to access DisneyNow. For some reason, DisneyNow is not compatible with Sling TV.

DisneyNow’s iOS, Android and Amazon Fire apps will let your kids enjoy Disney content on a wide variety of smartphones and tablets. Other support TV devices include Roku, Chromecast and Apple TV.

  • Living room devices: Apple TV, Chromecast and Roku.
  • Smart TVs and Blu-ray players: None.
  • Mobile devices and tablets: Amazon Fire, Android and iOS.
  • Game consoles: None.
  • Desktop browsers: Chrome and Safari.
