For those who have a need for speed, MotorTrend TV (formerly Velocity) is a go-to source like no other. Featuring the perfect blend of motorhead content, MotorTrend TV is also not always easy or cheap to obtain through traditional cable. However, a growing number of cord-cutting options will let you watch MotorTrend TV without cable at an extremely low cost

Below, we’ll explore your top 5 options to watch MotorTrend without cable, including one option that will only cost you $16/month.

Cord-Cutting Options to Watch MotorTrend (Velocity) Without Cable

In 2018, Velocity got a few upgrades, including a name change. Now, this car-enthusiast network is known as MotorTrend TV and is available at a low cost through a growing number of cable-free options.

If you’re looking to cut the cord on cable, or in the market for a live TV service that doesn’t require you to sign up with a cable or satellite company, the following five internet TV services carry MotorTrend TV:

These services range in price from a super-cheap $16/month (Philo) to over $80/month for the most expensive package (PlayStation Vue). In addition, each service comes with a multitude of additional features that make them a distinctly better option than cable TV.

Considered the “low-cost leader” in the market for live TV, Philo offers several dozen entertainment and news channels at rock-bottom prices. The service maintains a great set of features, even for its low cost, and has shown no signs of stopping its rapid growth.

Channels and pricing

Philo offers two different channel packages: a $16/month package that includes just over 40 channels, and a $20/month package that includes over 50 channels.

With Philo, those who want to watch MotorTrend without cable can opt for the $16/month package. That option includes MotorTrend TV, as well as a large number of must-have networks, such as Discovery, History, National Geographic, FYI, MTV, BBC America, and many more.

What’s the reason behind Philo’s low cost? There are no sports. If you’re a sports fan, Philo may not be the best option for you, or you may want to supplement it with another cord-cutting option. However, Philo’s success in the market thus far proves there’s a good number of us that don’t mind having a cheap, entertainment TV-focused TV option without sports.

Features

One of the primary reasons to cut the cord is the additional features you get with a “skinny bundle” internet TV service. This includes cloud DVR, multiple device streams per account, and numerous apps for your devices.

Philo has among the best features on the market. Each account offers 3 simultaneous streams so that three people can watch TV on different devices at the same time. You can even create two unique user profiles with each account. Each profile gets its own settings and DVR.

On the subject of DVR, Philo offers a 30-day cloud DVR with each subscription. You can record as much as you want, but any video recording will expire after 30 days. If you forget to record something, many of Philo’s channels offer a 72-hour rewind for videos. That way, you can catch most live TV episodes that you missed or forgot to record up to 3 days after they air.

Philo also has good (but not great) device support. You can download and watch Philo on dedicated apps for iOS devices, Apple TV, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Roku. You can also watch directly from your web browser. Unfortunately, the service has not yet added a native app for Android devices. You’ll need to watch through the Chrome browser on your Android device, which can be a bit battery-intensive.

Philo has a 7-day free trial for new users, and if you love the service, offers a $5 discount on a month of your service if you refer a friend.

sling tv velocity without cable motortrend tv without cable

There’s a good chance you’ve probably already heard of Sling TV. This low-cost internet TV “skinny bundle” service was one of the first on the market and continues to be one of the biggest players in the industry. Sling TV offers MotorTrend without cable at a price that’s above what you’ll pay for Philo, but well below any of the other options on our list.

Channels and pricing

Sling TV offers three different channel packages for subscribers:

Sling Orange Sling Blue Sling Orange + Blue
Price $25 $25 $40
Channels 30+ 40+ 50+
Simultaneous Streams 1 3 4*
ESPN Yes No Yes
Fire TV Support Yes Yes Yes
Roku Support Yes Yes Yes
Special Offers FREE ROKU DEAL FREE ROKU DEAL FREE ROKU DEAL

* You get one stream with Sling Orange and up to 3 simultaneous streams with Sling Blue.

For those who want to get Velocity/MotorTrend TV, however, there’s only one option: Sling Orange.

The $25/month Sling Orange subscription includes MotorTrend TV, as well as over 30 other TV channels. Disney-owned networks are the backbone of Sling Orange, so you’ll get a few ESPN networks and Disney Channel, among other interesting options. Sling Orange is great, but somewhat limited compared to Sling Blue in terms of its features (more below).

Additionally, if you’re hoping to watch MotorTrend TV through its own website or app, you’ll be out of luck with Sling TV. Unfortunately, you cannot connect to the MotorTrend TV website or app using your Sling TV credentials.

Features

With Sling Orange, you’ll be able to stream on just one device at a time. This is the most limited simultaneous streaming feature on the market of any service. It’s also much worse than what you’d get with Sling Blue, which offers 3 simultaneous streams.

Should you feel Sling Orange is too limited, you can combine it with Sling Blue with the Sling Orange + Blue package for $40/month. That will get you around 50 channels and will increase your simultaneous streaming options, at least for any channels in the Sling Blue package.

If you want cloud DVR with Sling TV, you’ll need to purchase a $5/month add-on. Sling’s DVR is somewhat sizeable for the price, however, at 50 hours with no time-based expiration on recordings.

One of the best things about Sling TV is its device coverage. There are dedicated apps for iOS, Android, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Roku, some LG TVs, and Xbox consoles. You can also stream directly from your web browser.

Sling TV has a 7-day free trial available to new users. You can also get device discounts through Sling TV, including discounts on OTA devices and Roku devices.

Hulu with Live TV

Hulu velocity without cable motortrend tv without cable

Hulu with Live TV is one of the best services on the market right now. It’s not the cheapest option you’ll find, but it has a growing number of TV channels and comes with some fairly impressive features.

Channels and pricing

Starting in February 2019, Hulu with Live TV will have several different channel options available to consumers, split between a “with ads” and “without ads” option.

With ads, you can watch Hulu with Live TV for $44.99 per month. If you want the service without ads, you’ll need to pay $50.99 per month. Note that that does not mean the TV shows you’re watching will be ad-free. Instead, any of the on-demand shows you’re watching that come as part of Hulu will either come with ads or be ad-free.

Regardless of which option you choose, you can get Hulu with Live TV with MotorTrend TV and over 60 other channels. You’ll find a good mixture of sports, entertainment and news through Hulu With Live TV.

Additionally, Hulu with Live TV comes with all of Hulu’s on-demand library, including the service’s original content, anime, and movie library.

Features

Hulu with Live TV has a great set of features.

For the price, you’ll get a 50-hour cloud DVR and 2 simultaneous streams per account. Should that not be enough for you or your family, you can add a third stream for anyone using your account, and an unlimited number of simultaneous device streams for anyone watching on your home network. That Unlimited Screens addon is $14.99 per month extra.

If you want a larger cloud DVR, the Enhanced Cloud DVR add-on costs $14.99 per month as well and increases your limit to 200 hours of video storage. You can combine both of those add-ons for $20/month to save money on them.

Hulu with Live TV also has pretty wide device support. You can stream directly from dedicated apps for Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, iOS and Android devices, Xbox consoles, and the Nintendo Switch. Web browser streaming is also supported.

All told, Hulu with Live TV is a great option, but it’s been experiencing some notable price creep. If you tack on everything you might want with this service, you might be getting pretty close to traditional cable prices, making it less worth it. But if all you need is MotorTrend TV and you love Hulu’s on-demand library, $44.99 per month is a fair price.

Hulu offers a 7-day free trial for new users.

PlayStation Vue velocity without cable motortrend tv without cable

PlayStation Vue is a much-beloved service among those who use it, but it suffers from some name confusion problems. Yes, you can use PlayStation Vue even without a PlayStation. And this unique service carries MotorTrend TV as well as a large number of other must-have networks.

Channels and pricing

PlayStation Vue offers more packages channel packages than the other options above. If you’re considering PlayStation Vue, you’ll need to choose between one of four channel packages:

  • Access: 45+ channels, $45/month
  • Core: 60+ channels, $50/month
  • Elite: 80+ channels,  $60/month
  • Ultra: All Elite channels plus HBO/Showtime, $80/month

The news isn’t extremely wonderful for those interested in PlayStation Vue. If you want to get access to MotorTrend TV through this service, you’ll need to opt for the Elite package at a cost of $60/month. Yes, that does come with 80 channels, including some fairly popular networks like multiple ESPN networks, Fox Sports 1 and 2, FX, FXX, FXM, NBA TV, NBC Sports, many local broadcasters, and more.

Still, at $60/month, you’re getting a bit uncomfortably close to the cost of traditional cable. And if your main focus is on MotorTrend TV, the asking price is a bit high compared to Philo or Sling TV.

Features

Despite the price, or perhaps even because of it, PlayStation Vue has some of the best features of any streaming service.

You’ll get 5 simultaneous streams per account, which is more than any other option on our list and more than any other service on the market without paying extra. You’ll also be able to create 10 user profiles, which is great for those choosing to share an account.

PlayStation Vue also lets you record an unlimited number of videos, although you’re limited to a 28-day expiration date on any video you record. However, each account user gets their own cloud DVR.

PS Vue can be streamed on more than just a PlayStation. Not only are PlayStation 3 and 4 consoles supported, but you’ll also find apps for Android, iOS, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Roku and more.

This service is available with a 5-day free trial.

DirecTV Now

DirecTV Now velocity without cable motortrend tv without cable

AT&T’s DirecTV satellite TV service branched off into a cord-cutting a few years ago. DirecTV Now offers live TV and includes the option to watch MotorTrend without cable.

Channels and pricing

You’ll find DirecTV Now provides a similar package setup to Sony’s PlayStation Vue:

  • Live A Little: 65+ channels, $40/month
  • Just Right: 85+ channels, $55/month
  • Go Big: 105+ channels, $65/month
  • Gotta Have It: 125+ channels, $75/month

There are key differences between DirecTV Now and PlayStation Vue. Primarily, DirecTV Now’s channel packages come in at a slightly lower per-month cost. The other difference is in the features. PlayStation Vue’s additional cost appears to translate to far better features.

The more important difference between the two is the cost to get MotorTrend, or in this case, we should say Velocity without cable. DirecTV Now still lists MotorTrend as “Velocity” in its channel line-up, and thankfully, you can get “Velocity” through the $40/month “Live A Little” package.

Features

DirecTV Now has so-so features that AT&T has promised to beef up in 2019.

On a positive note, you’ll get 2 simultaneous streams per account (industry average), a 72-hour rewind feature, and a cloud DVR. It’s the cloud DVR that is a bit lackluster, however. DirecTV Now’s cloud DVR option only offers 20 hours of storage, as well as a 30-day expiration date on videos.

This makes DirecTV Now the only major service that combines both an expiration date and a storage limit, which is a bit of insult to injury, especially when the storage limit is already the lowest available among its competitors.

Device support is pretty good, though, and DirecTV Now is on the same level as the competition in this regard. You can stream on a large number of dedicated apps, including on iOS, Android, Apple TV, Android TV, Roku, several smart TV brands, and Xbox consoles.

DirecTV Now offers its service with a 7-day free trial.
